A recent trend in Wedding Dresses are vintage gowns. Many girls are looking for a way to make their wedding day unique and a vintage gown can be just the thing to set you apart!
When looking for a vintage gown it is a good idea to understand the basic elements that make up different decades of gowns. Although there is a variety of gowns in each decade, there are some basic things that help catagorize them.
1920s:
These gowns have an ethereal quality - often inspired by the flapper style of this era, they usually have a great deal of lace and intricate design, but the skirts tend to be straight or slightly flowing. A lot of gowns from this era were also not just white, but varying shades of ivory, creams, champagne's and beige or even taupe:
In the 1930s the styles became a little simpler, lots of satin and silk, with sheath style skirts:
The 1940s saw a return of lace, and a slightly more full skirt:
In the 1950s we see a trend of a mid length calf length skirt, full skirts with simple bodice:
The 1960s were all over the map - some girls still wanted the Jackie O and Grace Kelly styles more like the 1950s designs while other girls opted from a more free style - short skirts with simple straight style without a waistline:
The 1970s were mostly long dresses, with flowing simple styles, often with lace or chiffon:
And the 80s followed the trend of the princess Diana gown - large sleeves, long trains, very full skirts, often with beading or elaborate design:
